Just Asking

We hear about walking away from toxic people all the time, but its usually in reference to the obvious types of toxicity. People that are abusive mentally, emotionally, verbally, or physically are fairly obvious. We know that addicts in recovery can’t expect to stay clean if they’re hanging around with addicts that are actively using.  But what about those people that are doing everything within their power to better their lives and make wiser decisions? Don’t they also need to watch the company they keep so as not to fall back into the same pitfalls as before? I mean, a happily married man is probably going to spend far less time with his old bachelor buddies once he is married, right? And on the occasions that he does, he’s probably going to carefully choose activities that will not tempt him or put his marriage in danger. So, why is it that we’re expected to stick to people that continue to act out immaturely or destructively if we ourselves are trying to better our lives? I am not suggesting we cut these lovely people out of our lives completely or permanently. However, is it so wrong to distance yourself from people that are continuously acting irrationally, knowing they are being irrational, while we work on being more rational? What about the friends that choose to remain in sick relationships, complaining about the same abuse day in and day out? The friends that repeat the same cycles over and over again? How are we supposed to get better if we surround ourselves with sick thinking people? Just asking for a friend. *grins*
